Aaarrrggghhhh!!!
Stars looked set to take second placed Romford's scalp when forging to a 6-0
lead after twenty minutes of their encounter in early December.
Stars co-ordinator Don Jamieson had started the goal rush at 7.17 with fellow
import and goal-poacher Dan Prachar, converting even half chances, notching four
goals by 19.37. At the other end Oxford's goaltender John Matassa had kept
Raiders' attack at bay turning aside 18 SOG for a first period shutout.
Romford changed netminders at the start of the second with Jamie Elliot
replacing Andy Nunn. Following a continuous series of minors awarded against
Oxford the Raiders climbed back into the game, snatching four goals by 25.23,
three on PPs, through Phil Gosbee (1+1), Marc Chartier (2) and Gord Jeffrey.
Stars confidence began to evaporate and the visitors were now in their stride
with Geoff Williams (1+1), Chartier and Chris Gruber (1+1) finishing off the
period with a convincing 7-2 middle term scoreline in their favour.
The outcome was now wide open with the Stars holding on by the single goal and
within 40 seconds of the final session face-off Chartier had tied the score at
8-8. Oxford's confidence was blown, Romford had staged a creditable comeback and
knew they had the winning edge. Peter Doig put the Raiders in front for the
first time at 43.21, with what was to be the GWG coming from Chartier (5+2)
unassisted at 44.41. A brief rally from the Stars resulted in Prachar (7+0)
rekindling their hopes at 46.49 but in a game which had been allowed to flow it
finished as it began with the officials calling minors and with all concerned
thankful for the final hooter.
