Fosters Menswear Midland League

This competition involving Oxford, Solihull Barons, Telford Tigers and Peterborough Pirates will be covered in a separate article.

Jimmy Shand came from Southampton Vikings to run the playing side, and was always our pub guide when we visited Southampton. He disappeared after this season unless he metamorphosed into an aged folk musician.

Urban Johannson set a record that still remains for parking tickets in a season, played in glasses, married Penny a figure skating coach (no link between these last two facts) and returned to Sweden where he became a travelling salesman. He still visits Oxford every few years.

Tom Smith joined us from Cleveland Bombers. He has since returned to Canada and works for the Toronto Fire Dept.

Full moon at Richmond

Oxford City Stars were plunged into a week of crisis coming up to 24th January.

Things started going wrong at the end of an extremely boring and quiet (penalty-wise) game at Richmond the previous Sunday evening. Won by Flyers 3-2 with no scoring in the final period there appeared little reason for incidents that took place at the final hooter.

Tom Smith got into a fight with Flyers' Jeff Young and both picked up match penalties. Not satisfied with this Smith then abused ref Jim Taylor and got an extra 10 minute misconduct penalty for his trouble.

Worse was to follow with fellow import Urban Johansson dropping his shorts on the ice in front of the referee and threatening him (Taylor) with physical violence over his handling of the game. For this he collected a Gross Misconduct penalty.

Stars' coach Petre Skala, already proving himself a strong disciplinarian, said: "I am disappointed, disgusted and bitterly upset." he went on to add that he would be reporting the incidents to the meeting of the club committee due that week.

The meeting on the 24th was the longest in the club's short history lasting almost 5 hours. During the latter part of the evening it became known thatb the BIHA's Disciplinaty Committee had already passed sentence on the two players, who were present and able to state their views to the Club Committee.

Johansson received a five game ban from the BIHA and a warning as to his future conduct. To this the club added a £300 fine and he was told that any future suspensions would result in his contract being cancelled. Smith was likewise warned by the club and fined £100 to go with his BIHA one game ban.

These incidents resulted in more local press coverage than some teams receive in a whole season. Unfortunately it was of the wrong kind with front page headlines quoting one City councillor saying that she was 'appalled' by the incidents and calling for the club's council funding to be stopped with the two platers sacked.

Player unrest was not confined to the imports. Several British players expressed criticism of their own treatment by the Club Committee at a players meeting on the day before the meeting on the 24th. Coach Skala, who was sympathetic to many of their points, agreed to put them to the Club Committee and as I write I understand that many of the players not unreasonable demands have been acceded to.

As the teansfer deadline date approached both Mark Lewis and Kevan Grace left the club to return to their former team Southampton Vikings, while Mark Ashton has also requested his release. This has been refused until he explains his reasons to Coach Skala.

Two new arrivals are forward Scott Gough and back-up goalie John Matassa, both from Glasgow Dynamos. I also understand that an experienced goalie may be joining the team from a Premier Division club before the deadline.
