Emma Bowles - Emma was the first female netminder to make a name at Oxford. She later played for GB and was a member of the Oxford City Rockets (5 years unbeaten and 5 time British women's champions), but she is best known for the one period she played for Oxford City Stars.
On 29 December 1985 Oxford were due to play a Foster Menswear Midland League match at Solihull. The Oxford team did not hear about the game until the last minute (they had been told it was postponed) and could only muster 4 first team players, only two of whom were regulars - Mike Kellond and James Cameron (yes, the current head coach). A mainly second team squad took to the ice against the Barons (British League Division 1 champions to be that season) and were 28-0 down after two periods. Oxford goalie Mike Kellond pleaded exhaustion after 50 seconds of the third period so Emma (who was only 16) volunteered to replace him. she faced 60 shots in the third period as solihull went for a record score and eventually won 50-0. Originally it was thought the BIHA would rule the game forfeit as a female had taken part, but Emma was properly registered with the BIHA as a player and their rule banning females taking part in men's senior games did not come into force until the 1986/87 season (the rule was of course rescinded some years later).

Paul Linton - Paul was one of the original Stars in 1984/85. He was one of the characters of the team and had previously played for the Streatham club (as had a number of our original recruits). After playing throughout that first season he was tragically killed in an incident at a party in Streatham. As a gesture of respect the Stars retired the number 11 shirt he had always worn. Also the rink bar was renamed in his honour (now you know why it's the Linton bar).

Amy Johnson - Amy is the GB women's netminder that stepped in at the last minute to play against Telford Wild Foxes in a top of the league clash in the 2001-2002 season. Stars had no netminder available and the league would only allow us to sign a female netminder as the transfer deadline for the game had passed when our normal backup decided to travel to Scotland with MK Kings. Amy (who is the sister of one of Oxford's junior players and was signed to the Bracknell women's team at the time) was rapidly contacted and agreed to ice. Amy played all 60 minutes and became the first female netminder to record a win in the senior leagues as we beat Telford 7-4. Amy remained in the squad for the rest of the season and was already signed for 2002-2003 when Stars withdrew from the league. She obtained her PhD in genetics this summer and is expecting to emigrate to Canada (Toronto) later this year. Don't be surprised in twenty years time if Canadian teams ice with netminders that have one large hand, one large forearm and extremely wide lower legs (which they can wrap round the back of their necks).

482 Days - This was the original Oxford City Stars fanzine produced by Colin Kirby and Nigel Laverick (right). Colin now lives in Tenerife where he works for the English language newspaper (but he will still be writing for this site). Nigel has moved to Leeds. For those that never knew, it can now be revealed that the title came from the length of a spell Stars went between home league wins back in the 80s (they won challenges, cup games and away games in this spell but the best they could do at home in the league was to draw). The winless streak ended with a victory over local rivals Swindon, or as Nigel put it in the club programme (which he also edited) 'we hadn't won a home league game for 482 days, but then we hadn't played Swindon'.

Ken Taggart - Most people today know Ken as the chairman of the English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA) but back in his murky past he was a USAF Master Sergeant based at Upper Heyford and a jobbing referee. In 1986/87 Ken took over the Oxford City Stars. Approaching retirement from the USAF, and anticipating that a forthcoming divorce settlement would leave him financially crippled anyway, he decided to fulfil one of his ambitions and own an ice hockey team (cheap to buy but expensive to run). He ran the club for an eventful season - one particular event was the introduction of Gat Unger as Stars' new player coach at a press conference in Oxford (Gary had been playing at Peterborough and at the time held the NHL record for consecutive appearances). Mr Unger was never seen again in Oxford as he got an offer to coach at an AHL (I think) franchise in the USA and was gone.
Ken moved on to manage the new Milton Keynes Ice Rink for a while and now runs the EIHA from his Colorado base.

Slapshot - Back in 1985/86 the club had a few discipline problems, and, as Stewart Roberts' Ice Hockey Annual puts it, 'The low point came in a 3-2 loss at Richmond on 19 January which was marred by scenes straight out of Slapshot'. Both Tom Smith and Urban Johansson (the most placid of players, previously best known for setting a new record for parking tickets received in the rink car park - a point of principle was involved) were suspended. Urban's actual offence was to start off doing a striptease by dropping his shorts at the referee in disgust at his performance (does this remind you of another hockey film?).

2. Todd Morgan - 154 pims - 1987/88
3. Ben Butler - 121 pims - 1987/88
Obviously 1987/88 was a vintage year for penalties. In fact Stars hit the 1000 minute mark for all games that season in their post season match at Cherbourg. That was the year that the Stars were sponsored by Truck Services (Witney) and run by one of that companies owners, Bob Edwards. The other owner was Pat Ward (!), a familiar face in the linesman's jersey nowadays (maybe a familiar red face now) who actually played in the game at Cherbourg.
2. Todd Morgan - 154 pims - 1987/88
3. Ben Butler - 121 pims - 1987/88
Cherbourg Trip
This was an interesting post season excursion for the Stars in 1988. A pair of raucous journeys on the ferry (we met up with a Welsh rugby team in the bar on one of the trips - strangely enough the bar seemed to be only occupied by rugby and hockey players after a few minutes) with a lot of drinking, people cartwheeling naked through the passenger lounge and doing tightrope acts on the ships rails, sandwiched three days in France.
The team were dissatified with the (youth hostel) accommodation supplied by their hosts and everybody ended up in £5 a night hotels down by the port. Apart from soundly beating Cherbourg in the first game ( the second game, against Caen, fell through, so Oxford and Cherbourg swapped a few players for a second match in the port), other events included forgetting about Jim Ryan (guesting for us on this trip) when we moved accommodation, three players being held up at knifepoint on the beach, and possibly the most violent game of football seen in France that year. The accident prone John Matassa (NM) was attacked by a bush in the football and then managed to break his thumb ten pin bowling (you're supposed to let go of the ball John). Other sights included Ben Butler climbing up the wall of his hotel at 3.00 in the morning (he was locked out) towards waiting hands in a first floor window.
We shall draw a veil over the rest of the events, but everybody lived and made it back to Blighty. When we arrived back at Portsmouth it took some fast talking to get Barry Smith (a US citizen) back into the country, and Customs initially decided to search the coach for contraband. They rapidly changed their minds after opening a couple of the kitbags.

Mark Ashton - Joined in the early days from Southampton Vikings before moving on (with Don Yewchin) to Basingstoke Beavers when they started up. Later became a coach.

Peter Clarke - A Solihull product who played many seasons for the Stars. Once won Stars man of the match award without touching the puck when man to man marking Jamie Crapper (now Craiper) of Bracknell.

Mike Fafard - Played for Sherbrooke Beavers and St. Jean Beavers in the QMJHL before coming to the UK to play for Dundee Rockets. One of the most skilful players ever to play for Oxford (also played for Lee Valley and Southampton). A mad French Canadian who used to disappear for days on end at times but a nice guy.
Derek Flint - Came to Oxford as an 18 year old in 1991 after making numerous phone calls to the management from Vancouver without taking into account the time difference. Has lived in Oxford since then except for a spell in Germany. Now married with one son and another kid due next spring.
Don Forster - A Bournemouth product who spent a while playing for the Stars.
Paul Foster - Local player who turned out off and on for the Stars as well as other Oxford teams. Father Gordon managed the Satellites and Paul married Becky Bowles, a member of the Oxford City Rockets (5 time British Champions) and GB international.

Ben Hardy - This Bracknell product played a few games for Oxford in 1993/94.
Derrick Harriot - Multi talented local guy who also played American Football for Oxford and soccer for Oxford City. A big man who worked as a bouncer and opened his own clothing shop in the Cowley Road. One of the world's nice guys but hockey wasn't his best skill.
John Harrison - Another player from Oxford's first year team.
Martin Haskell - From Bournemouth, there is some doubt whether he ever showed up for a game.
Dominic Hawley - A local junior who made one appearance for the Stars.

Ian Horsfield - Former Bournemouth defenseman who spent some time at Oxford.
Mike Iverson - Joined Oxford from Bournemouth Stags to improve our penalty minute totals.
Dean James - A short term fugitive from Bracknell.
Don Jamieson - Ran the team that won the EPL (player manager). Also played for Trafford Metros and now works in marketing for a North American team. Always kept himself aloof from his teammates and still known for the most impressive "own goal" in Oxford history which went the length of the ice into an empty net during a play off game. Visits the area occasionally and still in touch with some local supporters.
Martin Jeneway - Stopped off in Oxford for a while in a career that also saw him appear for Southampton Vikings, Slough Jets, Basingstoke Beavers and Solent.
Urban Johansson - Urban was a Swede new to the country when he joined Oxford for the first season. Wore glasses to play (a problem when he broke them) and still holder of the record for parking tickets received at the rink car park in a season, he's fondly remembered for his time at Oxford. He married Penny (a Canadian figure skating coach) and moved back to Sweden after two seasons. Works as a salesman and still visits Oxford every few years.
Doug Johnson - Started playing for the Stars when he was 15. A GB under 16 international who was lost to us when he went to study at Sheffield University.
John Johnson - Another youngster who made a number of appearances for the Stars before fading from the scene.
Dave Jones - Local player who took up the game when Oxford ice rink opened and had a couple of reasonably productive season's for the Stars. Injured his ankle jumping from a lorry to chase the phantom egg thrower of Thame.
Trevor Joseph - Former non league footballer (Oxford City, Wantage Town etc.) he was 27 when he took up hockey and 28 when he first played for the Stars (v Blackpool 3/11/85). He iced for Oxford until 2001 (round about his 44th birthday). Always looked out for his teammates and despite what opposition supporters might think one of the nicest and most popular guys ever to play for Oxford. Not someone to mess with on the ice, he still trains with the local recreational team.
Tim Joyce - Local junior who progressed to play defense for the first team before disappearing off to university.
Mo Kadhim - Former netminder and part-time mail model who moved on to Chelmsford after a season.

Robert Koutny - Had a short spell as an import at Oxford (axed after 4 games and limped off into the night never to be seen again) in a season he also played for Guildford and Paisley.
Keith Laing - Chalkie Laing came from Bristol and is best known for once realising he had left his wallet at a rink and getting the team coach to stop in the middle of nowhere so he could get off and hitch back to search for his money. Used to catch the milk train home after training. His spell at Oxford finished when he turned up a day early for a game (thinking he was late), dumped his kit at the rink and was never seen again.
John Lawless - Made two appearances for Oxford in between leaving Peterborough Pirates and taking up his role as player/coach/manager/god at Cardiff Devils for their first season. Was later involved in the early years of Manchester Storm when he was recruited there to get things going.
Jason Lester - A local forward from the early days who broke his kneecap jumping on to the ice in one game!
Mark Lewis - Joined from Southampton in the first season. A high scoring forward and BBC cameraman who was only around for a season or so. Picked up the nickname Huey after one away match.
Paul Linton - One of the rowdy personalities in our first year (arriving with a batch of players from London) he was a volatile character on the ice but a nice man off it. He was tragically killed in the close season at a party in Streatham. His shirt number was retired (No. 11) and the Oxford ice rink bar was named after him.
Ian Louch - ?
Dominic McGill - Made a couple of appearances as an emergency netminding signing. Played most of his hockey at Slough and Streatham.
Jim Malner - Former Richmond import who played for a spell at Oxford in 1986/87 (the season where there was a revolving door to the imports' changing room).
John Matassa - Born in Kettering but brought up in Glasgow John moved down with Scot Gough to play for Oxford. An accident prone netminder (he broke his thumb ten pin bowling in Cherbourg) he was a fine player who eventually moved on (after the break up of his marriage) to play for Blackburn and Medway amongst other clubs. Another player open to blackmail over certain photographs in our possession.
Phil Matthews - A gentlemanly player who was not to keen on the physical stuff. Never really got over being sent out to fight during a bench clearance at Chelmsford.
Mike McInerney - A local player who spent most of his time keeping net for the Satellites but did make a number of appearances for the Stars.
Andrew Medway - A local defenseman who worked his way through the junior programme to make the first team.
Alex Melville - Another youngster from the Oxford junior section who made a few appearances for the Stars before disappearing from the scene.
Mikhail Mikhailov - One of those short term import signings. Had tried out for Swindon then moved on to us.
Russell Mills - A forward who moved down here from Solihull and played for the Stars for a couple of seasons before disappearing without trace.
Scott Mill - Came down from Sunderland where he had been a high scoring import, but didn't last long at Oxford due to work permit problems.
Jon Minoli - A local player who became a squad member for the Stars. Has since taken on a senior role in his father's business,Minoli Tiles.
Vince Moore- Made a couple of appearances then followed the route of many players short on talent - became a referee.
Mark Murphy - Another from Glasgow - he arrived with Scott Rodger (do all Scots travel in pairs?).
Todd Morgan - Played for Toledo Golddiggers, Johnstown Chiefs, Carolina Thunderbirds, Virginia Lancers in the USA. This native of Chicago spent a season playing defense for Oxford (1987/88). Physically imposing, he supplemented his hockey income by doing some modelling.
Robbie Morris - Robbie arrived from Bristol in the mid eighties. Another character he eventually moved on to play for Cardiff Devils, Lee Valley Lions, Slough Jets and Romford Raiders. Mysteriously missing from the Stars line up the weekend of the St Paul's riots he now works in the music business.
Darryl Morvan - The Bull was one of Oxford's longest serving players. He was one of the originals from 1984/85 and even played a few times for Stars after he moved to Holland to work for a while. Still lives in Oxford and works for the police.
Dave Newman - Played for Oxford in our first couple of seasons. A Londoner who now is back in the area living in Bicester. One of the characters of the time who once went round the coach on the way to a game dispensing Algerian rocket fuel to players and supporters. Was once disappointed at Bournemouth when he forewarned us that he would be ejected from the game early so he could join us for a beer in the bar. Things went to plan except that the bar didn't open till late so he had to sit and watch the game.
Paul Nye - Another youngster who came through the junior set up and played a few times for the Stars. Now plays rugby for Oxford Harlequins.
Ian Ottaway - sic. Nuff said.
Chris Parker - Netminder from Bournemouth who was around for a short time.
Gary Peace - Who?
Ari Pekka-Mikkola - Another Finn, he spent a few months at Oxford in between stints with Trafford Metros, Lee Valley Lions and Blackburn Hawks.
Gary Plaistow - Joined Oxford after spells with Bristol and Swindon. A hard working forward who fitted in games around his duties for the RAF. He may be a better referee now than he was as a player (scary, huh!).
Dan Prachar - Came to play for Oxford in the late 1980s as a replacement for an injured Mike Fafard. in the end he stayed and Mike left. An alumni of the University of New Hampshire, he has also spent time playing for Solihull Barons/Blaze, Swindon Wildcats, Slough Jets, Milton Keynes Kings and Haringey Racers over the years whilst always living in Oxford. Married to a local he continues to referee and play and is one of the rink's managers.
Brian Reidy - Played two games for Stars without troubling the scorers.
Burt Richie - An import who lasted two Trophy games in 1991/92.
Gareth Roddis - Little ball of aggression from Solihull/Birmingham who may still hold our record for most penalty minutes in a game. This guy just didn't care. Played against us for Birmingham in 2000/2001 and still a nice guy off the ice. Was supposed to be getting married last year.
Scott Rodger - Another of the 80s Glaswegian exodus. Brother of Ally (Lee Valley etc), Scott was a chunky defenseman who was here for several months.
Jim Ryan - Ayr man who came down to Milton Keynes as a youngster and went with Stars on the trip to Cherbourg where he was left kipping in a youth hostel when everyone else went to alternative accommodation. Has an interesting condom trick.
James Schall - Local defenseman, son of Roland of Switzerland, came through the junior set up, and still plays rec hockey (I think). Does things in the computing world.
Jimmy Shand - Joined from Southampton as player coach for Oxford's first two seasons. A free scoring Canadian forward and bitter connoisseur. Had a costly trip to Blackpool courtesy of the fans.
Dave Shorny - Another Solihull player who dropped by at Oxford for a while.
Paul Simpson - Came down to Oxford from Cleveland Bombers as a youngster and did most of his growing up here. Developed into a high quality playmaker and spent several successful years here (not just on the hockey front) before returning up north to play for Humberside Seahawks. Has since become involved with Kingston Jets where he now coaches.
Peter Skala - Son of former Czech player and Stars coach Peter Senior. A talented youngster who drifted away whe his father's coaching stint finished.
Barry Smith - Former player for Erie Golden Blades, Mohawk Valley Comets, Carolina Thunderbirds and Troy Sabres he was a quality coach and came to play hockey rather than keep going as an enforcer in the North American leagues. Unfortunately when he stopped pounding people his frustrations came out through his mouth leading to more penalty minutes and suspensions than physical violence ever did (tells you something about officiating dooesn't it). Friend of Andy Moog (who visited in London) and ran an American hockey school. Set fire to his beard in Maxwell's when his Sambuca was lit and he was told to throw it back in one.
Rick Smith - A quiet Canadian who didn't like hockey but couldn't stop scoring. Joined us from Bristol, set our scoring record, and went on to play for Chelmsford Chieftains and Bracknell Bees.
Tom Smith - Joined Oxford as an import defenseman for our first season. Married an English girl who came down with him from Cleveland but that didn't work out and after a few years at Oxford he returned to Toronto where he is now a fireman.
Paul Spencer - A local youngster who never quite made it but was in the squad a few times.
Barry Spours - Another GB junior international originally from Streatham he played in net for Oxford in our first season. Later played for Humberside and in the Premier Division. Inside information led to the chant "He laughs, he smiles, but we know he's got piles" when he visited as an opposition player.
John Spours - Brother of Barry and a forward who had played mostly at Streatham and Brighton. He played for Oxford in our first season.
Tim Steadman - Came from Bristol and spent a couple of years at Oxford before joining the fledgling Cardiff Devils. A former European tour squash player who was renowned for playing imports in squash matches that they picked up injuries in (i.e. Steve Moria).
Pete Sterling - Local player who became a useful squad member.
Richard Stone - Local headbanging netminder, a man who knew no fear and no discipline, but was a nice guy when you got to know him. at one stage was suspended indefinitely by the club for a string of incidents culminating in an interesting event in the penalty box in a late night recreational game when he was playing defense for a change.
Dan Sweeney - Better known for his time with the Isle of Wight (also Sheffield, Solihull and Basingstoke) Dan was an import at Oxford for a spell.
Ken Taggart - One of the worst players ever to ice for Oxford, Ken played for Oxford in an early challenge at Cardiff (part of the deal that brought John Lawless to Oxford for a couple of games). We couldn;t stop him - he owned the Stars at the time. Went on to become chairman of the EIHA.
John Tague - Another Glaswegian netminder john joined us from Peterborough Pirates. He continued to live in Peterborough so after late night practises he virtually drove straight to work. In the mid 80s when we played in Glasgow we had more supporters than they did with all our players families turning out. John was a nice guy who later moved on to play for Lee Valley.
Stuart Thomas - Local netminder who came through the junior system and played several times for the Stars before wanderlust struck and he offered himself to the world. Now living in Thailand I think. Spent the first part of his stars career picking splinters from his posterior - he was once asked what he would do if a penalty shot was given to the opposition and replied that he would "slide down the bench to get a better look at how Matassa saves them".
Paul Thomason - Wandering forward who spent time at Oxford as well as Telford, Swindon and Solihull.
Jack Thornton - A Canadian married to a local girl who was living locally for a while. Believed to be related to NHLs Scott (at one stage there was a chance he would ice for us in a challenge) Jack is mainly remembered for a single punch that knocked out Trafford's Dave Shepherd. When Shepherd approached him in the bar afterwards we were preparing to take cover, but all Dave did was congratulate him on the punch! In a later game he broke his hand when trying to fight a facemask.
Mike Turner - Affable forward from Solihull who played a couple of seasons for Oxford.
Mike Urquhart - Kamloops Chiefs, Calgary Centennials, Nottingham Panthers, Chelmsford Chieftains, Guildford Flames, Bracknell Bees, Milton Keynes Kings.
Jari Virta (left) - A Finnish looney (though with a closer grip on reality than some of his hometownfriends who used to arrive in a big American car lacking tire tread, tax and insurance) who joined us from Lee Valley Lions. One of the most skilled forwards ever to play for Oxford he at times kept us in games on his own. Involved in the infamous night at an Edinburgh where the club ended up with a ban from Stakis hotels.
David Wallington - Gazza now plays rec hockey at Oxford but he did turn out for the Stars many seasons ago. Used to want to fight the world.
Pat Ward - Stars oldest ever player, he iced in our second match in Cherbourg. He was co-owner of truck Services Witney when they sponsored and ran the team. Still around doing sterling work in black and white stripes.
Carl Warnock - A defenseman who came down from Cleveland Bombers in the 80s. On an away trip he was able to sleep through whilst his room door was being changed by a carpenter.
Martin Weddell - One of the original Stars team in 1985, a large, ponderous defenseman (and probably the most sensible person on the team) Martin moved on to Bracknell where he is now rink/complex manager for Nike Leisuresport.
Tony Weeden - Part-time player in Stars first season when he was already at the veteran stage.
Liam Wheddon - A short term visitor as an import for Oxford. Also played for Portage Terriers and Telford.
Daryl Williams - Son of John (who ran the Stars for a spell in the nineties) Daryl came through the junior set up and into the first team. Always large and not the most mobile player Daryl was dogged by injuries although he still trains with the rec team on Mondays.
Dave Wilson - One of the best playmaking defensemen to play at Oxford and an important part of our English Premier League championship team. Learnt his hockey at Streatham and also played for Guildford. Married to a local girl and every year or two someone bumps into him in town.
Monty Wise - A veteran netminder from Streatham, Monty made a few appearances for Oxford in the early years.
Peter Woodbridge - Another fleeting visitor from Bracknell.
Ian Wotherspoon - A young (at the time) forward who came to Oxford from Bristol.
Don Yewchin - The only import we,ve ever had who read Danielle Steel novels on the team coach. A quiet man who came to Oxford from Bournemouth Stags and lasted longer than most in the revolving door season. Also played for Trafford Metros and Slough Jets, but is best known as the player/coach brought in to set up the Basingstoke Beavers team.
Jim Taylor - North American referee who iced for Stars in a challenge match at Cardiff (one of their first games - 2,500 spectators)
Protohavan Venkatramen - Finn who iced in a challenge at Cardiff
Timo Kantokorpi - Finn who iced in a challenge at Cardiff
John Nizonoft - Played in a summer challenge at Swindon (their first game)
Kenny McKie - Peterborough Pirate who guested for Oxford in a challenge match at Swindon.
Doug McEwan - Guested for Oxford at a challenge match in Swindon. At one stage he was possibly going to become an Oxford import, but decided to go to Cardiff Devils instead!
Chris Royce - Another Peterborough player who guested for Oxford in a challenge at Swindon.

These guys played for Oxford City Stars in the Dark Ages (1994-97) of which little is known. These are just the ones that don't appear elsewhere in the listings.
Freddie Andreasson - Young Swede who played in 1995/96 and early in the 1996/97 season.
Alan Armour - Long time Swindon forward who spent a season or two at Oxford. Small and feisty
Grant Bailey - Another Swindon player who popped across to Oxford for a season.
Richard Boprey - Former Slough import, Eurosport commentator etc. etc.. Has since worked (in marketing I think) for the Superleague and the London Knights.
Simon Chanin - Local junior netminder who played a few times in 1996/97
Neil Liddiard - Another short term visitor from Swindon.
Andy McGurk - Swindon forward who floated over to Oxford on various occasions over the years.
Richard Miles - Local youngster who played a couple of seasons before drifting away.
Ian Richards - High scoring Swindon forward who was a regular visitor pre-season and actually played for a spell in 1996/97.
Mike Smith (NM) - ?
Mike Smith - Bristol/Swindon player who iced in the mid/late 90s for Stars and would have been playing for us this season.
Danny Sturgeon - Who he?
Jason Thomas - Swindon netminder who spent some seasons at Oxford in the late 90s and now lives in Tenerife.

Player list 2000-2002 (does not include players already mentioned above.)
Kris Abbott - England under 19 international from Gosport (although joined us from Bracknell). Free scoring forward.
Anders Agmell - Short term Swedish import.
Ben Andrews - Under 19 defenseman who made his first appearance against Telford last Christmas as an emergency call up.
Michael Bennett - Another Under 19 player who made a few appearances in 2000/01. Not around much last season but potentially a good forward.
Charlie Burden - Played for the first part of 2001/02 before getting injured and disappearing from the scene.
Geoff Butterfield - Netminder from Haringey who joined for a spell last season before moving on to Bracknell in search of icetime.
James Cameron (Junior) - Speedy free scoring forward who always gave 100%. Son of JC Snr, had the longest hair seen on an Oxford player.
Matt Cameron - Brother of James and Steve, a GB age group netminder who was Oxford's No.1 netrminder for the last two years (whilst still an under 19). Now a trainee accountant.
Steve Cameron - Maddest member of the Cameron clan (possibly excepting his father. A utility player with a penchant for nose rearrangement (normally his own). Your mother might like him, but she doesn't know what he's really like.
Brett Candon - Called here for a while from Bracknell before moving on to Basingstoke.
Lewis Clifford - Reliable back up player last season (which meant a lot of icetime some games last year). We were still looking for his best position when he moved to Milton Keynes in the close season (that may be it).
Andy Cox - Local product with plenty of skill, a dodgy soldier, and plenty to learn (passing). Also a top class roller hockey player. Plays defense and has a lot of potential - last season was his first as a senior.
Adam Dobson - Local Under 19 netminder who made a couple of appearances for the Stars before moving on to Slough last season.
Alex Eberhardt - A German who came over last year to work at the BMW plant and ended up playing hockey as well. Irregular appearances for tax reasons(?!).
Darren Elliott - Long time Oxford player who came up through the junior system and spent several seasons with the Stars (albeit with a brief sojourn to Milton Keynes). Moved to Basingstoke for last season. Matt Enright - In the junior set up for several years, his appearances at the rink diminished as his age increased, but did turn out the odd time for the first team.
Simon Ferry -
Andy Goddard - Gosport player who appeared on defense for Oxford for the first half of 2000/01. Now playing rec hockey.
Alan Green - Spent many years working through Oxford's junior set up before moving to Milton Keynes. Briefly reappeared last season.
Josh Grocutt - Another from Gosport who turned out as a utility player for the Stars in between his visits to America. A hairdresser who also coaches.
Ade Haigh - A traveller from Southampton who had also previously played at Basingstoke. A nice guy except on the ice, travelling took it's toll (or it would have done if he'd done it more often).
Richard Hardy - Yet another Bracknell defenseman who spent some time playing here.
Jon Paul Ibrahim - Cardiff based player who appeared a couple of times in 2000.
Amy Johnson - GB women's netminder who came to our rescue in the great netminding crisis of 2001 (see Oxford trivia) and stayed on. Has now got her PhD in genetics and is due to move to Toronto soon.
Andy Johnston - Still young(ish) but with as many clubs as Jack Nicklaus. Joined us from Bracknell and skated around a lot for the rest of the 2001/02 season.
Ben Kossick - Iced a couple of times last season when an under 16. Now playing for the Under 19s.
Ben Lay - Local player called up many times for England under 18s and 20s (but not that many appearances for them). Plays defense for the Under 19s now, but scored well as a forward for the seniors last year. Another with the talent to be very good, but you need more than talent.
Andy McGurk - Every few years a phone call comes from Swindon and Mcgurk appears over the horizon. Sometimes a couple of games, sometimes longer.
Oliver Medcalf - Iced a couple of times for the Stars when an under 16 a couple of years ago. Has England age group honours and now plays at Slough.
Andy Morgan - Chunky defenseman who iced a couple of times last season after joining us from the Bison.
Bill Morra - A Canadian who iced the second half of 2000/01 for the Stars after joining us from Chelmsford.
Peter Nyman - Large Swedish defenseman, best known for his time with Wightlink, who alternated between us and Basingstoke Bison in 2000/01.
Alex Parris - Played a couple of times for the Stars last season whilst still an under 16. Currently playing for the under 19s.
Luke Plasted - Iced for the Stars several times over the last two seasons when still an Under 16. Played in Conference matches last season and also went as part of the GB junior squad to the IIHF camp in Germany last season. Now playing for the under 19s.
Neil Plasted - Older brother of Luke who iced a couple of times for the Stars last season.
Danny Richardson - Answered an emergency call to play for the Stars last Christmas when he was one of the Under 19 squad.
Chris Roberts - Back up netminder who was a cause of the great netminding crisis of 2001.
James Roberts - Older brother of Chris and Matt. Joined Milton Keynes for this season after many years at Oxford. Added depth to the squad last season.
Matt Roberts - First played for the Stars as an under 16 two years ago. Aggressive player who has suffered several injuries.
Jeff Sinnott - Canadian who lives in Newbury. Previously played for Blackburn, Swindon and Oxford Blades. Utility player who joined us last season.
Steve Slater - Former Wightlink player bases in Southampton who joined us for a few games last season before succumbing to injuries and excuses. Returned to the Isle of Wight in the close season.
Scott Stroud - Young defenseman who played for us a couple of times two years ago when an under 19. Moved on to Slough last year.
Danny Summers - A local forward still icing for the under 19s who turned out for the Stars a couple of times last season.
Pete Taylor - Another steady player from Milton Keynes who helped add depth to the squad last season. Returned to MK in the close season.
Danny Turner - We need a macro really - another Bracknell product who spent some time with us two years ago.
Chris West - Former Aldershot, Bracknell, Basingstoke etc. player who joined us for the 2000 season. Pleasant enough off the ice he seemed to want to prove he was a hard man on it (and failed).
Glen West - Brother of Chris and a more talented player, but did tend to play follow the leader when Chris started things off. Had a good season in 2000/01 when he was high up in the team (and league) scorers standings.
Ben White - Still an under 19, Ben has appeared a few times for the seniors in each of the last two seasons.
Marlon Williams - First joined the club as a cute (not a description for today) under 12, and has been around much of the time since then. Made a couple of appearances for Stars in 2000/01 but struggled to get much ice time.
Greg Wyatt - Here we go again. Joined Oxford from Bracknell for a couple of months last season before moving on to Basingstoke after a spectacularly inept display at Milton Keynes.
Robert Koutney - He was from Prerov (Psheroff) 150 miles east of Prague in the Czech Republic. Started skating at 5 years old. Age 25

Oxford Chill (1997)
The Oxford Chill trained for the pre-season at Oxford Ice Rink, but then a plant failure closed the rink for several weeks and they made an arrangement to play their fixtures in Swindon during the closure. They never returned, but they did start the season as the Oxford Chill before changing their name to the Swindon Chill when their move became permanent. They started off as a mix of Swindon and Oxford players (Swindon originally had no team that season.

Oxford Inter-Pub Ice Hockey Championships
Back in Spring 1987 an Oxford Inter-Pub ice hockey championship was held for the first and only time. It was arranged by Adrian Matthews (now in charge at Chelmsford ice rink) and run with the assistance of the Stars who supplied equipment, expertise and referees (Tom Smith, Paul Simpson, Carl Warnock, Emma Bowles and John Matassa). Nobody from the club was allowed to play for any of the pub teams of course.
Being England this was really a championship for anyone that could actually stand up on the ice and most of those had to lean on their sticks to achieve that much. Attempted shots often meant the shooter slliding further on his/her posterior than the puck travelled, whilst the no-checking rule was relaxed for players just falling into each other. The Rose & Crown and The Flying Fishes obviously spent more time working out their nicknames than practising their skating judging by their performances, and the final winners are clouded in obscurity (or beer fumes - the rink bar was open then) - let us know if you remember.
In common with the normal policy on this website the guilty are named below for you to question or ridicule (some of them are still alive and occupying the same bar stools).

Foreign Visitors
Back in the early days we used to see a lot of late night challenge matches against touring teams from overseas. These tended to involve teams of varying strength with Stars players mixed in with other local players. Here are a few of the teams we played with a few notes about some of them.
King George - A team from the small town of Maxville in Canada (GlenGary County somewhere between Montreal and Quebec)
AC Camel - A Swedish team from Stockholm. The match was actually played in Swindon (January 1985) and ended in a 7-7 draw.
Toronto Eagles -Played in February 1986, this match ended in a 9-8 loss. Jim Gauthier and Brian Sims of Altrincham guested for Oxford in this match.
Wandaalit - A Finnish 4th Division team from Ventee supplemented by a couple of Lee Valley's Finnish imports (Ari Arvila and Vesa Pennanen)
Normannit -This was a Finnish team from Helsinki. Vesa Pennanen (Lee Valley) and Geoff Delderfield (Lee Valley, later Oxford) guested for the tourists.
As you can see, we are a bit short on information on these visitors so if you know anything about these teams (or any others that have visited Oxford) please contact us.
Motorsports
On 23 August 1992 Paul Stewart Racing, a Formula 3 team that eventually evolved into the Jaguar F1 team, brought a car onto the ice before Stars game v Stevenage. The team drivers that year were Gil de Ferran and Andre Ribeiro and Ribeiro (who went on to Indycar racing in the States) took on allcomers at ice go cart racing after the game.
Summer of '89
Back in 1989 the team decided to try a few alternative sports over the summer. This following a toe in the water with a cricket match against forest Green the previous summer. First up Oxford City Stars took on Forest Green at cricket. Forest Green scored an alarming number of boundaries on their way to 183-6 off the 20 overs with only Dave Wilson (2 wickets for 8 runs off the last over) worthy of mention amongst the Stars bowlers (unless you count the efforts of Barry Smith, now looking at videos for the Vancouver Canucks organisation - if ever you meet him ask about it) . Wilson and Morvan opened the batting for Oxford but the only players to make double figures for the Stars squad were Wilson (16), Gary Dent (16) and Trevor Joseph who in a sparkling 26 minute innings struck two sixes and six fours in a total of 42 as Oxford crashed to 106 all out in 19.2 overs.
Next sport was baseball and on August 6 about 30 players, supporters, passers by and stray Canadians gathered by the rink. Mike Fafard proved he had made the right choice of sports and John Matassa amazingly avoided injury as a team led by Trevor Joseph beat one led by Don Lester (one of the Canadians) 21-18.
Last sport tried was Aunt Sally with a Stars team of John Matassa, Richard Stone, Jason Lester and Dave Wilson just shading the four team tournament despite failing to score enough to make the main supporters club team (Nigel Laverick, Richie Bennett, Gary Dent and Simon Murray (of later refereeing fame)) throw for the third time in that match-up.
1. Stars first ever goal was scored by dave Newman in the 14th minute of their first game.
2. Stars first ever penalty was assessed on Paul Linton.
3. Oxford first Heineken British League win was against Richmond Flyers (9-2).
4. Stars first ever match was against Oxford University on December 2nd, 1984 - they won 8-5 in front of a crowd of 700.
5. On Feb 9th, 1985 Stars played the University in a hastily arranged challenge match - the University walked off after 52 minutes following a prolonged brawl that saw 4 Stars players ejected from the game.
6. On April 20/21 1985 Oxford beat Sheffield 10-2 and Aviemore 6-1 to win the British League Division 2 play-offs.
7. On May 22, 1985 Oxford's players, officials and supporters are stunned to learn of the murder of popular player Paul Linton the night before in a Streatham wine bar.
8. Oxford travel with almost a total reserve/junior team to Solihull to face the Division One leaders in the Fosters Midlands League. Emma Bowles plays in net for the last two periods as Stars are hammered 50-0.
9. On March 1, 1987 Oxford beat Swindon 9-6 at home in an HBL Division One game, their first home league win since November 3, 1985. They had won in other competitions and away in this stretch of 482 days.
10. March 13, 1988 sees Stars in Chelmsford. Six Stars are ejected from the game in two bench clearances, the second of which leaves Oxford with just four outfield players and winger Ben Butler in goal. Only two goals are conceded in the last ten minutes as Stars slip from 4-4 to 4-6.
